Track Brumation

Workflow overview

Follow these steps in ReptiDex. Controls may vary by platform.

  1. Open an animal
  2. Start brumation with a note
  3. End brumation when care resumes

Brumation is recorded on an individual animal. ReptiDex keeps the animal's normal lifecycle and sale status while showing a separate brumation indicator. Use the control when you begin a planned brumation period, then end it when the animal resumes its ordinary routine. Your own husbandry judgment and species-specific guidance should determine whether brumation is appropriate.

Start brumation

Open Animals, select the animal, and look for Mark as Brumating near the profile actions. The control appears for species that support brumation. If an animal is already marked as brumating, you can still end that period even if its species record has changed. Selecting the start control opens Start Brumation. Add an optional note about the cooling setup, dates, or observations, then confirm. A blank note is allowed. The profile shows a Brumating badge and, when a start date is available, the number of days elapsed. The badge sits beside the animal's ordinary status; it does not mark the animal inactive or change its sale state.

Understand paused reminders

Routine feeding reminders and weight alerts pause for that animal while it is brumating. This avoids treating a deliberately changed routine as missed day-to-day care. The brumation setting does not erase feeding or weight history. You can still open the animal and record observations when needed. Check Today and Settings > Notifications for other work and preferences. If an expected prompt is absent, first check whether the animal is currently marked as brumating before changing its feeding or weighing schedule.

End brumation

Return to the animal profile and select End Brumation when the period is over. The active badge is removed. Routine feeding and weight alerts stay paused for a seven-day grace period after brumation ends, so old overdue entries do not trigger a burst of alerts. They resume according to their normal settings after that window. You can still log care during the grace period. Review those settings and your next scheduled care entries as the animal returns to its routine. A historical end date is retained, but the current control is designed for the active period, not a full timeline of multiple past brumations. If the button is unavailable or a save fails, refresh the animal record and confirm its current state before trying again. Keep detailed care observations in the corresponding feeding, weight, and notes areas rather than relying on the start note alone.
