Setting Your Preferences

Preferences is where you tell ReptiDex how you work. Setting these up before you add your first animal saves time and keeps your records consistent from day one.

Go to Settings > Preferences to access everything on this page.

Animal ID Format

The ID template controls how animal IDs are generated automatically when you add a new animal. The default template is {SPECIES:2}-{COUNTER:3}, which produces IDs like CR-062 for a Crested Gecko.

A live preview updates as you type so you can see exactly what your next ID will look like before saving.

Available tokens

TokenOutput
{SPECIES:2}First 2 letters of the species name (e.g. CR for Crested Gecko)
{COUNTER:3}Auto-incrementing number, zero-padded to 3 digits (e.g. 062)
{DATE:MMYY}Month and year of the add date (e.g. 0426)
{DAM}Dam's ID
{SIRE}Sire's ID

Click Presets to choose from pre-built templates if you'd rather not build one from scratch.

Counter Scope

Controls how the counter increments:

  • Global -- one counter shared across all animals regardless of species. Animal 1 is CR-001, animal 2 is LE-002.
  • Per Species -- each species gets its own counter. Your first Crested Gecko is CR-001, your first Leopard Gecko is also LE-001.

Allow Manual Override

When enabled, you can edit the auto-generated ID when adding a new animal. If disabled, the generated ID is locked in. See How to Add Animals for how this appears in the add flow.

Primary Species

Sets your default species so new animals pre-fill with it already selected. If you breed primarily one species, setting this here saves a tap every time you add an animal.

Default Animal Visibility

Sets the visibility applied to every new animal you add -- Private, Lineage Only, or Public. You can override it per animal in the add form.

See How to Add Animals for a full explanation of what each visibility level means.

Auto-Approve Link Requests

When enabled, incoming pedigree link requests from other users are approved automatically without requiring your review. Leave this off if you want to manually approve every request. See Approving or Rejecting Link Requests for how the approval flow works.

Units and Display

  • Weight Unit -- Grams, Ounces, or Pounds. Applied across all weight entry and display throughout the app.
  • Temperature Unit -- Fahrenheit or Celsius.
  • Show Scientific Names -- displays the scientific name alongside the common name throughout the app (e.g. Crested Gecko Correlophus ciliatus).
  • Compact List View -- shows your animals as a compact list instead of cards. Useful for large collections.
  • Default Animal Sort -- sets the default sort order when opening the animals list: Name, Date Added, ID, or Weight.
