How to Add Animals
Building an accurate collection record starts with adding each animal so you can track weight, feeding, genetics, and lineage over time. This guide walks you through the add animal form in ReptiDex on both web and mobile.
Getting Started
Web: Navigate to Animals in the left sidebar, then click + Add Animal in the top right corner.
Mobile: Tap Animals in the bottom tab bar, then tap the + button in the bottom right corner.
The Add Animal Form
Animal ID
Every animal needs an ID. By default, ReptiDex generates one automatically using
your ID template. You'll see a placeholder like UNK-062 until you select a
species -- once you do, it updates to a formatted ID like CR-062 based on your
template settings.
If you want to set your own ID instead, tap or click Manual and type whatever you'd like.
Tip: You can customize your ID template format and set a default species in Settings. See Setting Your Preferences.
Fields
The only required field is the Animal ID. Everything else is optional but recommended:
| Field | Notes |
|---|---|
| Name | A personal name for the animal (e.g. Almond Joy, Human Bean) |
| Species | Required for the auto-generated ID to format correctly |
| Sex | Male, Female, or Unknown |
| Date of Birth | |
| Status | Active, Sold, Deceased, Holdback, External, or Lease |
| Morph Description | Free text describing genetics (e.g. Red Base Harlequin) |
| Sire / Dam | Link parents from your own collection at add time |
Public Profile Visibility
Controls who can see this animal outside your collection:
- Private -- only you can view this animal.
- Lineage Only -- the animal appears in pedigree trees but has no standalone public profile. This is useful for placeholder animals: if a parent to one of your animals isn't on the platform yet, add them as Lineage Only so the lineage tree is accurate without creating a searchable public profile. When that breeder joins, you can link their animal properly.
- Public -- anyone can view the animal's full profile. Public animals can be linked to QR codes, appear in search results, and other users can request to link them as ancestors in their own pedigrees.
Linking Parents
During the add flow you can only select parents already in your own collection. After the animal is saved, you can link animals across collections from the animal's detail page.
Tips
- Select your species first so the auto-generated ID formats correctly before you save.
- You can edit any field after saving, including visibility, parents, and morph details.
- If you're adding a whole clutch at once, add each animal individually using the same sire and dam. The reverse lineage feature (coming soon) will let you batch-assign offspring directly from a parent's profile.
