How to Track Pairings and Estimated Hatch Dates
Without a breeding log, it's easy to lose track of which pairs produced which clutches and when hatch dates are coming up -- especially across multiple simultaneous seasons. This guide shows you how to manage your entire breeding program in ReptiDex, from setting up seasons and pairs to tracking individual eggs and monitoring hatch dates.
Navigate to Breeding in the left sidebar (web) or tap Breeding in the bottom tab bar (mobile).
The Breeding Dashboard
The main Breeding page gives you an at-a-glance overview of your current season: active pairs, separated pairs, total clutches, and hatch rate. Upcoming hatch dates are listed with countdowns so you always know what's due next.
Step 1: Create a Season
Seasons organize your breeding records year over year. Go to Breeding > Seasons and click + New Season. Enter a year, start and end dates, and optional notes for goals or planned pairings.
Create a season before adding pairs -- all pairs and clutches are filed under a season.
Step 2: Add Pairs
A pair is a male and female you've intentionally put together for breeding. From the season view, click + New Pair and select your male and female from your collection along with the pairing date.
You can also manage all pairs independently at Breeding > Pairs, which gives a focused view across all seasons with pair status, morph cross, pairing date, and separation date.
Prospective Pedigree Preview
Before committing to a pairing, you can preview what a prospective offspring's pedigree will look like. Click or tap Preview Pedigree on any pair to see the combined lineage tree -- paternal line, maternal line, and any external ancestors. Useful for evaluating lineage depth before you pair.
Step 3: Record Clutches
When a female lays, record the clutch from the pair. Click + Record Clutch and enter the lay date and egg count. ReptiDex calculates the expected hatch date automatically based on species incubation data.
Each clutch tracks:
- Lay date and expected hatch date
- Incubation day counter
- Individual egg status -- Laid, Fertile, Infertile, Pipped, Hatched, or Failed
Tracking Individual Eggs
Each egg in a clutch is tracked individually. Click or tap an egg to update its status as it progresses through the incubation cycle.
Note: To mark an egg as Hatched or Failed, you must first record a candling result. Tap Candle on the egg, enter the candling date, result (Fertile, Infertile, or Uncertain), and any notes. Once a candling result is recorded, the Hatched and Failed options become available for that egg.
Step 4: Monitor with the Clutches View
Breeding > Clutches gives a focused view of all active clutches across all pairs. Each card shows the pair, lay date, expected hatch date, incubation day, and current egg statuses. You can mark entire clutches as Hatched or Failed from this view, or manage individual eggs directly.
Completed and failed clutches are hidden by default. Click Show all to see the full history.
Breeding Calendar
Breeding > Calendar plots all breeding events on a monthly calendar -- pairings, separations, egg lay dates, expected hatches, and actual hatches. Click any day to see what events are scheduled. Events are color coded by type so you can see at a glance what's coming up.
Tips
- Create your season first, then add pairs under it. This keeps records organized year over year.
- Expected hatch dates are calculated automatically from the lay date using species-specific incubation data.
- Use Prospective Pedigree Preview before pairing to evaluate lineage depth and spot potential inbreeding.
- Candle early and record the result -- an egg cannot be marked as hatched or failed until it has a candling record.
- The Breeding dashboard's upcoming hatches list is the fastest daily check during active incubation season.
