What Evans Hypo looks like

Homozygous Evans Hypo. Reduces melanin production without eliminating it. Produces a brighter, cleaner animal with reduced dark pattern elements, lighter-edged saddle marks, and more vivid orange and yellow tones. Dark eyes are retained (distinguishing it from Albino). Named after Randy Evans who established the line.

Reduces melanin production (hypomelanistic). Homozygous Evans Hypo animals display a general lightening and brightening of coloration. Darker pigment elements are reduced in intensity, producing a cleaner, higher-contrast appearance with brighter orange and yellow tones and lighter, less dark-edged saddle marks. Unlike Albino, Evans Hypo does not eliminate melanin; it reduces it, so eyes remain dark and some dark pigment persists in patterning. The "Evans" designation distinguishes this hypomelanistic line from other hypo lines that have been claimed in western hognose. Named after Randy Evans, who established and documented the original line. Community complementation testing confirms this line is genetically distinct from any other hypo lines produced by different breeders (Hypo A x Hypo B = wild-type-looking double hets when from different lines, confirming independent loci). When combined with Albino, produces the Coral morph, a vivid orange-coral animal where Evans Hypo's melanin reduction works synergistically with complete albinism to produce intense warm coloration.

How to identify it: Brighter, cleaner coloration with reduced dark pattern elements; saddle marks lighter-edged; overall lightening compared to wild-type but with dark eyes retained (not pink/red). Distinguished from Albino by the retention of some dark pigment and dark eyes. Distinguished from wild-type by the overall brightening and reduction of melanin-containing elements. Compare to Albino for eye color confirmation.

How Evans Hypo is inherited

Evans Hypo follows a recessive inheritance pattern, carried on the Evans Hypo allele (locus EVHY).

What does het evans hypo mean?

Because Evans Hypo is recessive, an animal needs two copies of the allele to show the trait visually. An animal with a single copy is called het evans hypo (heterozygous). A het animal looks normal but carries the gene, so pairing two het evans hypo animals produces, on average, one in four visual evans hypo offspring.

Combo morphs with Evans Hypo

  • Coral

    Double recessive Albino + Evans Hypo. The complete removal of melanin (Albino) combined with Evans Hypo's melanin-reduction effect produces a vivid coral to orange-red animal with intense warm coloration. Red/pink eyes from Albino. The synergy between the two mutations produces more intense coloration than either alone. Genetics modeled as Albino + Evans Hypo per community consensus.

  • Lemon Ghost

    Double recessive Evans Hypo + Caramel. The melanin reduction of Evans Hypo combined with the warm golden-brown shift of Caramel produces a clean lemon-yellow to golden animal. The reduced melanin from Evans Hypo allows Caramel's warm tones to show more cleanly, producing the characteristic lemon/golden ghost appearance.
