Data import / migration
Bring your spreadsheet. Keep your records.
Moving a reptile collection into a new app should not mean retyping every animal. Export what you already track as a spreadsheet, map the columns once, and migrate your records into ReptiDex with your IDs kept as they are.
Included on Pro and Premium. Sign in to open the importer.
File formats
Upload a CSV or Excel export
ReptiDex reads a comma-separated CSV file. Excel, Google Sheets, and every other spreadsheet tool can save your records as CSV, so you can export from whatever you keep your collection in today. There is no rigid template to match before you upload.
Field mapping
Your columns, matched to the right fields
The importer reads your column headers and pre-fills the mapping, so a column called Gender lands on Sex and a column called Birth Date lands on Date of Birth. You confirm each match before anything is created. Species is the one required field.
- Animal ID
- Your existing identifiers, kept as they are
- Name
- Whatever you call each animal
- Species
- Matched to the ReptiDex species list
- Sex
- Male, female, or unknown
- Date of birth
- Hatch or acquisition date
- Status
- Holdback, for sale, breeder, and more
- Morph / traits
- Your morph or trait notes
- Notes
- Any free-text detail you keep
Your identifiers
Your existing IDs come across as they are
Map your ID column to the Animal ID field and every animal keeps the identifier you already gave it. Your labels, your records, and any tags you have printed still line up after the move, so nothing has to be renumbered.
How it works
Three steps, a few minutes
Most keepers finish in a few minutes. Larger collections take a little longer to review, but the mapping is a one-time pass.
- 1Step 01
Export your spreadsheet
Save your collection as a CSV from Excel, Google Sheets, or whatever you use today. No template to fill in first.
- 2Step 02
Map your columns once
ReptiDex reads your headers and pre-fills the field mapping. You confirm or adjust each column, so your export does not have to match a fixed layout.
- 3Step 03
Bring your animals over
Generate an import link, open it in the ReptiDex app, and your animals arrive in your collection with their IDs intact.
Plans
Import is included on Pro and Premium
Import is a paid feature. It sits on the Pro and Premium plans, next to notifications, bulk actions, and export. For a larger program, the plan is a non-decision: you move a full spreadsheet across in one pass instead of retyping animals one at a time.
Moving out is open too. Your records belong to you and you can export the whole collection any time. See how data ownership works.
Questions
Import questions, answered
- What file formats can I import?
- ReptiDex reads a comma-separated CSV file. Every spreadsheet tool, including Excel and Google Sheets, can save your records as CSV, so export from whatever you keep your collection in and upload the file. There is no fixed template to match.
- Which fields does the import map?
- The importer recognizes the columns keepers track most: animal ID, name, species, sex, date of birth, status, morph or traits, and notes. It reads your column headers and pre-fills the mapping, then you confirm or adjust each one before the import runs. Species is the one required field.
- What happens to the animal IDs I already use?
- Your existing IDs come across as they are. Map your ID column to the Animal ID field and each animal keeps the identifier you gave it, so your labels, records, and any printed tags still line up after the move.
- How long does an import take?
- Most keepers finish in a few minutes. You upload the file, check the field mapping, and generate an import link. Opening that link in the ReptiDex app brings the animals into your collection. Larger collections take a little longer to review, but the mapping step is a one-time pass.
- Is import free?
- Import is included on the Pro and Premium plans. If you keep a larger collection, the plan pays for itself the first time you move a full spreadsheet across instead of retyping it animal by animal.
- Can I import into ReptiDex when I am switching from another reptile husbandry app?
- Yes. Export your records from your current tool as a spreadsheet, then upload that file here. The column mapping step means your export does not have to match a rigid format, so you can migrate from almost any app that lets you export your data.
