The Sable/Cappuccino Allelic Complex: First Confirmed in Crested Geckos

Part of the Crested Gecko Genetics Series. Last updated March 2026.

The confirmation that Sable and Cappuccino are allelic (different mutations at the same genetic locus) was the first allelic complex proven in crested gecko genetics. The proof came from breeding Sable to Cappuccino and producing Luwak offspring instead of Super Cappuccino. This post covers both traits in depth, the Luwak proof, and what allelism means for breeding.

For genetics fundamentals, see Genetics Basics Explained. For Lilly White safety (which intersects with Cappuccino via Frappuccino), see the Lilly White Safety Guide.

The Sable/Cappuccino Allelic Complex - FIRST CONFIRMED IN CRESTED GECKOS

Allelic complex diagram showing Sable and Cappuccino

MAJOR DISCOVERY: Sable and Cappuccino are ALLELIC. They occupy the SAME GENETIC LOCUS. This is the first confirmed allelic complex in crested gecko genetics and fundamentally changes our understanding of these traits.

What "Allelic" Means

Alleles are different versions of the same gene at the same location (locus) on a chromosome. Think of it like:

  • A locus is a "parking spot" on the chromosome
  • Each individual has TWO parking spots at each locus (one from each parent)
  • Alleles are different "cars" that can occupy those spots
  • Sable and Cappuccino are different "cars" competing for the same TWO spots

Because they occupy the same locus, an individual can only have TWO alleles total at that spot:

Possible Genotypes at Sable/Cappuccino Locus:

  • SA/SA - Super Sable (both spots have Sable)
  • CAPP/CAPP - Super Cappuccino (both spots have Cappuccino)
  • SA/CAPP - Luwak (one Sable, one Cappuccino) ← This proves allelism!
  • SA/+ - Het Sable (one Sable, one normal)
  • CAPP/+ - Het Cappuccino (one Cappuccino, one normal)
  • +/+ - Normal (both spots have normal allele)

CANNOT have:

  • Super Sable AND Super Cappuccino simultaneously (only 2 spots total)
  • More than 2 alleles at this locus (physically impossible)
  • An animal with SA/SA/CAPP (would need 3 spots)

Critical Implication: You CANNOT get Super Sable AND Super Cappuccino traits in the same animal. They're competing for the same genetic real estate.

Cappuccino (CAPP) - Incomplete Dominant, Allelic with Sable

Cappuccino crested gecko showing melanistic coloration

What It Is

A color modifier that affects melanin expression, creating darker, more melanistic appearances. Part of the first confirmed allelic complex with Sable.

Alternate Names: Mel, Melanistic, Translucent (all refer to Cappuccino)

Genetics Deep Dive

Inheritance: Incomplete dominant
Category: COLOR_MODIFIER
Locus Code: CAPP
Allelic With: Sable (SA). Same locus, different mutations.

Expression:

  • One copy (CAPP/+): Heterozygous Cappuccino. Darkened, enriched appearance
  • Two copies (CAPP/CAPP): Super Cappuccino. Extreme melanistic/translucent, health considerations
  • CAPP/SA: Luwak. Allelic combination showing blend of both super forms (proves allelism!)
  • +/+: Normal (no Cappuccino)

Visual Characteristics

Heterozygous Cappuccino (CAPP/+):

  • Darkened base color (browns, deep colors)
  • Enhanced pattern contrast
  • Richer overall appearance
  • Sharpened pattern edges and definition
  • "Coffee and cream" aesthetic
  • Combines beautifully with all patterns

Super Cappuccino (CAPP/CAPP):

  • Extreme melanistic/translucent appearance
  • Different skin texture (smoother, more translucent quality)
  • May have structural considerations:
    • ~11% show reduced nostril size
    • <3% develop spectacle eye (eyelid fusion, treatable)
    • May have shorter snout structure in some individuals
  • Both sexes are FERTILE (rumor of infertility is FALSE)
  • NO special humidity needs (rumor is FALSE)
  • Can be bred ethically with monitoring

Health Considerations - Super Cappuccino (CAPP/CAPP)

Based on Nearly 100 Animal Study (Korea, US, UK programs):

This is the most comprehensive health study conducted on any crested gecko morph. Nearly 100 Super Cappuccino and Sorak animals were evaluated across international breeding programs.

Structural Issues (Homozygous CAPP/CAPP only):

Nostril Size (~11% affected):

  • Some Super Cappuccino show reduced nostril size
  • Appears as smaller nostril openings
  • Most do NOT have breathing difficulties despite reduced size
  • Does not typically require intervention
  • Monitor hatchlings carefully

Spectacle Eye (<3% affected):

  • Rare condition where eyelid fuses partially or completely
  • Can affect one or both eyes
  • Treatable with simple surgical procedure
  • Does not typically affect quality of life after treatment
  • Monitor hatchlings carefully

Snout Structure (variable):

  • Some individuals may have shorter snout structure
  • Does not typically cause functional problems
  • Cosmetic consideration for some breeders
  • Select against if concerned

Temperature Correlation:

  • Lower incubation temperatures (69-71°F) correlate with REDUCED structural issues
  • Higher temperatures may increase expression of issues
  • Recommendation: Incubate Super Cappuccino eggs at 69-71°F

Important Clarifications:

These issues appear ONLY in Super Cappuccino (CAPP/CAPP)
Heterozygous Cappuccino (CAPP/+) shows NO health issues
Both sexes remain fertile (NOT sterile - false rumor)
Do NOT require special humidity (FALSE rumor - care is normal)
Can live normal, healthy lives with monitoring
NOT lethal (unlike Super Lilly White)

Breeding Recommendations for Super Cappuccino

Best Practices:

  • Avoid direct inbreeding (outcross regularly)
  • Outcross to animals with better structure (improve line)
  • Evaluate ALL hatchlings for nostril size and eye health (monitor carefully)
  • Incubate at 69-71°F optimal temperature (reduces issues)
  • Select against structural issues over generations (improve health)
  • Keep detailed health records (track trends)
  • Be honest with buyers about health data (ethical disclosure)

Ethical Breeding:

  • Super Cappuccino is NOT lethal (can be bred ethically)
  • CAN be produced responsibly with monitoring
  • Should evaluate and avoid breeding animals with severe structural issues
  • Responsible breeders track and share health data
  • Transparency with buyers is essential

This is fundamentally different from Super Lilly White:

  • Super Lilly White = 100% lethal, never acceptable
  • Super Cappuccino = Can be healthy with monitoring, ethical when done responsibly

Breeding Cappuccino

Cappuccino (CAPP/+) × Normal (+/+):

Cappuccino (CAPP/+) × Normal (+/+)Normal (+)Normal (+)
Cappuccino (CAPP)CAPP/+CAPP/+
Normal (+)+/++/+
  • 50% Cappuccino (CAPP/+)
  • 50% Normal (+/+)
  • All offspring viable
  • No health concerns

Cappuccino (CAPP/+) × Cappuccino (CAPP/+):

Cappuccino (CAPP/+) × Cappuccino (CAPP/+)Cappuccino (CAPP)Normal (+)
Cappuccino (CAPP)CAPP/CAPPCAPP/+
Normal (+)CAPP/++/+
  • 25% Normal (+/+)
  • 50% Cappuccino (CAPP/+)
  • 25% Super Cappuccino (CAPP/CAPP) - monitor for health

Super Cappuccino outcomes:

  • Evaluate hatchlings for nostril size
  • Check for spectacle eye development
  • Incubate at 69-71°F
  • Select best for future breeding
  • Avoid breeding those with severe issues

Cappuccino (CAPP/+) × Sable (SA/+):

THIS IS THE CRITICAL BREEDING THAT PROVED ALLELISM:

Cappuccino (CAPP/+) × Sable (SA/+)Sable (SA)Normal (+)
Cappuccino (CAPP)SA/CAPP (Luwak)CAPP/+
Normal (+)SA/++/+

Outcomes:

  • 25% Normal (+/+)
  • 25% Cappuccino only (CAPP/+)
  • 25% Sable only (SA/+)
  • 25% Luwak (SA/CAPP) - allelic combination ✓

WHY THIS PROVES ALLELISM:

If Sable and Cappuccino were the SAME trait:

  • Sable × Cappuccino would produce Super Cappuccino
  • Just like Cappuccino × Cappuccino produces Super Cappuccino
  • All offspring would be Cappuccino or Super Cappuccino

If Sable and Cappuccino were DIFFERENT INDEPENDENT traits:

  • Could get animals with BOTH traits simultaneously
  • Could get combinations freely

What ACTUALLY happened:

  • Sable × Cappuccino produced Luwak
  • Luwak shows characteristics of BOTH super forms BLENDED
  • This is "the mixture of both super forms" - incomplete dominance at work
  • This pattern = ALLELES at the same locus

Historical Significance:

  • First confirmed allelic complex in crested gecko genetics
  • Proved by systematic breeding trials (Hyunmoo/Reptile City Korea)
  • Published and peer-reviewed by breeding community
  • Represents major breakthrough in understanding crestie genetics
