Hognose Snake morph
Hognose Snake (Heterodon nasicus)
Homozygous Toffee Belly. Primary feature is a golden-amber to toffee-yellow belly replacing the typical bold black-and-white checkered ventral pattern. Dorsal pattern may also appear slightly lighter or modified. Named for the distinctive warm-yellow ventral coloration.
Modifies belly coloration and patterning. Homozygous Toffee Belly animals display a distinctive yellow-toffee or golden-amber coloration on the ventral surface, replacing the typical black-and-white checkered belly pattern of wild-type western hognose snakes. The dorsal pattern may also show some modification, typically appearing slightly lighter or with modified contrast. The belly modification is the primary and most diagnostic feature of this mutation. The toffee/golden-amber belly color creates a striking visual contrast with the dorsal pattern and is immediately recognizable in visual animals. Toffee Belly is independent from all other listed loci. Creates the Toffeeconda combo when combined with Anaconda, where the modified belly coloration meets the reduced dorsal pattern.
How to identify it: Toffee/golden-amber to yellow belly coloration replacing the typical black-and-white checkered ventral pattern; dorsal pattern may appear slightly modified. Visual inspection of the belly is the primary identification method. Compare to wild-type hognose belly (bold black-and-white checkered). Toffee Belly produces a clean golden-yellow to amber ventral surface.
Toffee Belly follows a recessive inheritance pattern, carried on the Toffee Belly allele (locus TOFB).
Because Toffee Belly is recessive, an animal needs two copies of the allele to show the trait visually. An animal with a single copy is called het toffee belly (heterozygous). A het animal looks normal but carries the gene, so pairing two het toffee belly animals produces, on average, one in four visual toffee belly offspring.
Toffeeconda
Homozygous Toffee Belly + heterozygous Anaconda. Combines the golden-amber belly modification of Toffee Belly with the reduced dorsal pattern of Anaconda. The interplay of a modified ventral surface and reduced dorsal patterning creates a clean, minimally patterned animal with a striking toffee belly. The portmanteau name "Toffeeconda" is widely used in the hognose community.
